COMMUNITY SERVICE ACTIVITIES

Habitat For Humanity Blitz Build

The Rotary Club of Houghton Lake has assisted the Roscommon County Habitat For Humanity in the completion of eight new homes in the last eight years. Two homes were completed at the same time in 1998 and 1999. Blitz-builds in 2000 and 2001 completed new homes in under 15 hours and set 1st and 2nd place Michigan Habitat For Humanity build records. Rotarian Jim Kent is the President of the Roscommon Habitat For Humanity.

2009-10 Goal: Investigate support of a new Rotary/Habitat blitz-build.



Rotary / Interact - Houghton Lake Area Bike Rodeo

In 1998, The Houghton Lake Area Bike Rodeo was at risk of cancellation. The acting Bike Rodeo coordinators could no longer devote the time needed to continue the annual event. The Houghton Lake Rotary Club and HLHS Interact Club agreed to co-sponsor the Houghton Lake Area Bike Rodeo to continue this important community service. The Bike Rodeo teaches children in grade K-5 important bike safety, inspects bikes for repair or adjustments, registers bikes with the State Police, fingerprint ID children with the county Sheriff, and provides helmets to children who do not have one or have a helmet that no longer fits properly. Kiwanis, Lions, Masons, American Legion, and many community volunteers support this project.

2009-10 Goal: Sponsor a successful Houghton Lake Area Bike Rodeo.



Adopt-A-Highway

The Rotary Club of Houghton Lake is an active Adopt-A-Highway sponsor for the section of M-55 running from US-127 to Federal Rd. in Houghton Lake.

2009-10 Goal: 100% member participation.



Roscommon Township Park

The Rotary Club of Houghton Lake was the major contributor to the Roscommon Township Park. The park was created on lakefront property located at the intersection of Federal and M-55.

2009-10 Goal: Enjoy the park.
